Polio Workers Slain in Pakistan

Gunmen opened fire on 2 female health workers while they were administering polio vaccines in an Afghan refugee camp in northwestern Pakistan, killing both women and their police guard.

The shooters escaped, and while there was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack, the Pakistani Taliban have repeatedly targeted polio immunization workers drives, accusing them of being spies. “Hard-line Islamists have long opposed the vaccination campaign as un-Islamic and a conspiracy to make people infertile,” The New York Times reports.

The repeated attacks have seriously undermined efforts to stamp out polio in Pakistan, 1 of 3 countries where polio remains endemic.
