Tuberculosis: Europe Under Siege

Though TB infection rates are falling in Europe’s high priority-countries, multi-drug resistant TB is “still ravaging” Europe, according to  Zsuzsanna Jakab, WHO’s regional director.

The most recent data on TB in Europe (from 2013) shows 360,000 cases in the 53-country region, which includes the former Soviet Union states. About 65,000 cases were reported in the European Union’s 28 countries, according to the joint WHO/European CDC report

The current 6% rate of decline in TB will make it impossible for Europe to make its 2050 TB elimination goal.
