In Latin American countries with absolute abortion bans—and high rates of unsafe abortions—women are turning to hotlines for information on self-induced abortions with misoprostol.
5 of the world’s 7 countries with an absolute ban on abortion are in Latin America, and according to the WHO, Latin American and the Caribbean have the highest regional rate of unsafe abortions globally at 31 per 1,000 women aged 15-44.
Volunteer hotlines, like the Abortion Liberty Hotline in Chile, are teaching women about misoprostol, which has become the go-to home remedy. In the 1980s, women in the region discovered that the side effects warning included that it could induce bleeding if taken when pregnant. Since then, clinical studies have validated misoprostol as an abortifacient.
