No Rest for India’s Elderly

Senior citizens, who were once revered and idolized in Indian society, face neglect from family and government—a malaise that has been found to infect all social strata and all regions of the country.

The Numbers: 1 in 5 elderly people (defined as 60+) encounters physical and emotional abuse almost daily, according to recent research by HelpAge India, a leading charity dedicated to the care of seniors.

“The benefits outlined in the government’s policy on older persons… [have] yet to reach target beneficiaries. There is a dearth of adequate geriatric care infrastructure,” says Aabha Choudhury, chairperson of the nonprofit Anurgraha.
