“Not My Problem” Attitude

Homeless men in Chicago say that Puerto Rico’s municipal government and police arranged one-way tickets for them to receive heroin addiction treatment in the US. Adriana Cardona-Maguigad, editor of the bilingual newspaper The Gate, heard this story over and over.

She unravels the mystery of off-the-grid treatment centers—where no one seems to take responsibility for the people they're treating—in the latest episode of This American Life.

“I talked to a lot of people [in Puerto Rico]. I even talked to the governor,” says Cardona-Maguigad. “They're completely open about sending users off the island.”
