China’s First MERS Case

China confirmed its first case of the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) today, in a South Korean man.

Authorities are monitoring 38 people who had close contact with the man, the son of another MERS patient in South Korea last week. Chinese authorities fear the disease could spread but so far no one else has shown symptoms.

The WHO said that South Korea has 10 confirmed cases as of Friday, but they emphasized that there has not been sustained human-to-human spread; all cases so far are related to the same person who came down with the illness after traveling from the Middle East.
