Good news: Eating chocolate can help you lose weight, according to a research study published in late March in the International Archives of Medicine.
Bad news: It’s junk science, according to its lead author John Bohannon. The science journalist says he carried out the hoax to expose how the media trumpets bad nutrition science and fails to check its sources.
Bohannon and colleagues did a real diet study involving 16 people and found that the participants who followed a low-carb diet and ate 1.5-ounces of dark chocolate daily lost weight faster than the control group. The problem: too few subjects and research measuring too many factors. Plus the article wasn’t peer reviewed by the “pay-for-play” journal that published it.
