Girl Power

Determined to tackle female genital mutilation and child marriage, international development secretary Justine Greening described the focus of Britain’s Department for International Development (DfID) on women and girls as “relentless.”

“The days of being able to simply ignore poverty around the other side of the world are over,” she said, alluding to the Ebola outbreak, migrant crisis and enduring terror threats.

Development is more than aid and trade, she insisted, adding there can be no meaningful progress in any country unless the rights and prospects of women and girls are protected and improved.
