Holistic Healing for Congolese Women

In war-torn Goma, Congo, orthopedic surgeon Kasereka “Jo” Lusi performs much-needed operations—and fights for the rights of the women he’s helping.

Lusi and his late wife founded HEAL Africa—now the region’s premier teaching hospital—with the philosophy of holistic medicine. Between 2002 and 2012, about 4,800 survivors of sexual violence received medical treatment and were empowered through vocational training, literacy classes and micro-credit loans.

In a country where “raping a woman is like nothing, we must show women their rights and teach the men,” Lusi said in an interview with Kem Knapp Sawyer, from the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting.
