Perfect Storm for HEV

Come monsoon season, survivors of Nepal’s earthquake—especially pregnant women—face a "very high" risk of a hepatitis E outbreak, infectious disease experts warn in a new Lancet article.

The tremor that killed over 8,500 people and injured more than 23,000 displaced thousands more people and limited clean drinking water and sanitary facilities—conditions ripe for circulating hepatitis E virus (HEV).

The 1 safe and effective vaccine available is only licensed for use in China, but it could save 400 pregnant women if used in Nepal, experts say.
