Virome in a Drop of Blood

An experimental, $25 test can reveal every virus you have ever been exposed to—all within a single drop of your blood.

The antibody-detecting test can reveal past exposure to just about the entire human “virome,” (all the viruses known to infect people)—more than 1,000 strains of viruses, described in a study in Science led by Stephen J. Elledge, a genetics professor at Harvard Medical School.

The researchers anticipate many creative uses for the test, including tracking patterns of disease in various populations, comparing people based on age or geography, and determining whether viruses or the body’s immune responses contribute to cancer and chronic diseases.
