New App Tackles FGM

The UK has launched Petals, a free app developed by a team at Coventry University, to educate girls about FGM and allow them to access helplines anonymously.

The app’s debut comes just ahead of “cutting season” when girls living in the UK are at risk of illegally being taken out of the country to undergo FGM. In the UK, more than 20,000 girls are at risk of FGM, and up to 170,000 women have undergone the procedure.

“Until recently this harrowing practice too often remained in the shadows and kept a secret despite the unimaginable and lifelong suffering it can cause,” said Nicky Morgan the secretary of state for education and minister for women.
