The Drinking Problem in Africa

Southern sub-Saharan Africa has the 2nd highest rates of early death and disability from alcohol use in the world, just behind Eastern Europe, according to the Global Burden of Disease Study 2013.

12 sub-Saharan African nations were among the 20 countries with the highest rates of healthy years lost to alcohol use in 2013. It turns out that alcohol use causes more early death and disability in that region than unsafe water and inadequate breastfeeding.

These findings make a target under Sustainable Development Goal 3—“strengthen the prevention and treatment of substance abuse, including narcotic drug abuse and harmful use of alcohol”—all the more important.
