Pipe Dreams

Dorothy Zulu, rinsing clothes in a dirty stream, dreams of a small vegetable garden and having water in her home. Like many in Ngombe, she spends up to a 1/3 of the $1 a day she makes on water.

The proportion of Zambians with access to clean water has increased overall since 1990. But in urban areas it has dropped to 85 percent in 2012 from 89 percent in 1990.

"If you don't have money here you can't drink water," Zulu said.
