Continuing Aftershocks in Japan

The devastation of the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami in northeast Japan was not limited to homes and other tangible structures and objects.

Heavy drinking is becoming a serious problem in the three communities most severely affected by the quake, and health officials are starting support groups and other services to reach out to individuals who are struggling.

Medical professionals say that the deaths of family members, prolonged displacement and loneliness have led some residents of hard-hit areas to turn to excessive drinking.
