Today marks the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, an area in which the world has made great strides, according to a Lancet editorial.
A goal on gender equality was included in the Sustainable Development Goals and countries have been passing laws to protect women and girls. There has also been increasing recognition of trafficking as an issue for the health sector, not just law enforcement.
One neglected issue has been engagement with civil society, especially women's groups. The activists who put the issue on the map are increasingly being left out of the discussions.
