In Syria, Health Hazards Escalate Alongside War

Amid escalating war in Syria, WHO reports it’s getting harder to deliver supplies and medicine to people trapped in Islamic State strongholds.

Health officials also see rising typhoid and diarrhea caused by the lack of clean water, and they expect more acute respiratory infections with winter on the way. Another concern: that cholera could spread into Syria from Iraq.

The Quote: "The main concern is, of course, communicable diseases, but also trauma cases. We have more than 25,000 newly injured per month in Syria and the system is overburdened," said Elizabeth Hoff, WHO representative in Syria.
