FGM: Conviction, But No Justice

Raslan Fadl was the first doctor in Egypt to be handed a prison sentence for performing female genital mutilation (FGM), after a 13-year-old girl in his care died. Nearly a year after his conviction, he has yet to serve a day in prison.

An NPR reporter tells how she easily tracked Fadl down, finding him working at a government hospital. Earlier, Egyptian police officials had claimed that Fadl was on the run and they were searching for him day and night.

“They [the police] feel he didn't really commit a crime and they don't really have to go and arrest him,” says Suad Abu Dayyeh of Equality Now, an international organization that pushed for Fadl’s conviction.
