A Nuclear Nightmare

Indian citizens living downstream from an enormous uranium mining and processing complex are routinely exposed to exceptionally high levels of radiation, Indian and Japanese scientists report.

Adrian Levy, a London-based investigative reporter, provides an in-depth look at the issue even as the state-owned Uranium Corporation of India Ltd flouts international safety standards.

The Indian government has either rebuffed or suppressed findings, insisting that any illnesses are caused by poverty, not radiation. Infertility and birth defects are among the illnesses that residents and local groups attribute to the radioactive pollution.
