Black Lung Disease Strikes Chinese Workers

Migrant workers in China continue to suffer disproportionately from black lung, or coal pneumoconiosis, due to employers who flout regulations.

The workers are often unable to access medical care for the disease, which can only be treated with lung transplants and affects almost 6 million patients in China.

A live transplant surgery last week in Wuxi, Jiangsu Province on Weibo, China’s microblogging platform, revealed the fatal calling card of black lung—a rigid black 4 cm nugget in the patient’s lungs. The video attracted 52 million viewers, encouraging activists trying to raise awareness about the plight of the workers.
