Lack of Family Planning Choices for Women

A lack of birth-control choices for many women in India, combined with a society that discourages male sterilization, places the onus of birth control on women.

According to Family Planning 2020 (FP2020), female sterilization accounts for almost 75% of the modern contraceptive methods used in India, while male sterilization stands at 2.3%, despite the fact that vasectomy is considered a far less invasive procedure.

“There needs to be a concerted campaign to educate men about sterilization. Most men believe that they become sexually weak after getting sterilized which isn’t true,” explains Pratibha Mittal, senior gynecologist and obstetrician at Fortis Hospital, New Delhi.
