Public Health Fault Lines

Short-staffed following budget cuts, state public health officials in the US are concerned they lack the resources to respond to the Zika virus outbreak and other threats.

They hope that Congress will approve President Obama’s $1.8 billion request to battle Zika’s spread. The funds would go toward eradicating the mosquitoes responsible for spreading the virus, vaccine research and preventative education.

The Quote: “Not only have the last major threats not been as severe as they might have been, they have also been sequential,” said James Blumenstock of the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials. “The issue is: What if the next pandemic is not as mild as the last ones? What if more than one of them happens at once?”
