Maternal Health Village with High Expectations

Just like a traditional village, the Maternity Waiting Village in central Malawi offers all the perks of communal living—and it might also put a dent in high maternal mortality rates.

With hospitals out of reach in cost as well as distance, rural women here often give birth at home. By housing those with high-risk pregnancies a few weeks before they’re due, the village makes a hospital birth possible and gives doctors a chance to monitor complications.

Similar attempts failed previously—an outcome the MASS Design Group, which helped design and develop the village, chalks up to design flaws it hopes a well-ventilated indoor-outdoor design will correct.
