RIP, Nancy Reagan

Former US first lady Nancy Reagan, who died at age 94 yesterday from congestive heart failure, leaves a legacy that extends past her well-known devotion to her husband, former President Ronald Reagan.

“Her greatest role may have been when he was afflicted,” said historian Craig Shirley, noting Nancy Reagan’s efforts to raise funds for Alzheimer’s and stem-cell research after her husband developed Alzheimer’s disease, The Washington Post reports.

Writing for Vox, Emily Crockett touched on Nancy Reagan’s complicated role in the AIDS crisis during her husband’s years in office, but also recalls her efforts to push her husband to do more to fight AIDS.
