Safer Abortions for India

In India, abortion is allowed under almost all circumstances—but it is still often stigmatized, hard to access, and unsafe, especially for poor women in rural areas.

In fact, the Guttmacher Institute estimates that about 9% of maternal deaths in India arise from complications of unsafe abortions. In the hope of improving access to safe abortions, the NGO Ipas is working to expand the provider base and enhance training—while also enhancing access to contraception.

Upon realizing that post-abortion counseling is often neglected, Ipas began emphasizing that aspect of service in its trainings—coaching providers, for example, not to pry into questions about marital status, and to offer non-judgmental information about contraception that respects women’s choices.
