Hits on hospitals in Syria by Syrian and Russian forces are no accident, Amnesty International concluded after examining patterns of airstrikes.
“Syrian and Russian forces have been deliberately attacking health facilities in flagrant violation of international humanitarian law. But what is truly egregious is that wiping out hospitals appears to have become part of their military strategy,” said Amnesty International’s Tirana Hassan.
The organization compiled evidence of at least 6 deliberate attacks on hospitals, medical centers and clinics in the past 3 months; Physicians for Human Rights reports at least 346 attacks on medical facilities, with 705 health workers killed, since the conflict began.
Such attacks constitute clear violations of the laws of war, which grant hospitals and health units special protection.
