A Drama on Depression

While depression is the leading cause of disability among adolescents worldwide, many poor countries can offer little in the way of mental health services.

Psychiatrist Stan Kutcher of Dalhousie University in Halifax found a solution in Bahati, a radio soap opera he devised that follows a teen who gets pregnant, finds out her boyfriend uses drugs and endures stress and depression, reports Joanne Silberner in NPR’s Goats and Soda blog. The radio drama, which was first broadcast in Malawi and Tanzania 18 months ago, is followed by a discussion of depression and what can be done to make things better.
