Ecuador Needs Food, Not Volunteers

People reeling from Ecuador’s April 16 earthquake need food and essential supplies more than hands-on help at this point.

Furthermore, volunteers may be doing more harm than good. “Many volunteers have arrived; many do not have food and are not self-sufficient when it comes to food and shelter; this complicates things a bit,” said Jorge Zambrano, the mayor of Manta, a coastal city in a hard-hit province.

IRIN also provides an interactive graphic of the numbers affected:

  • 113 rescued alive, 155 missing, and 587 dead
  • 8,340 injured
  • 25,376 homeless
