A Record Low for Abortion Rates—in Wealthy Countries

Abortion rates have dipped significantly since 1990 in the developed world—but not in the developing world.

Based on data collected from governments, agencies and studies, researchers led by Gilda Sedgh, ScD learned that in the developed world, the abortion rate dropped 19 points from 46 to 27 per 1,000 women. In the developing world the rate fell by just 2 points from 39 to 37.

The results suggest that women in poorer countries need greater access to contraception and reproductive health care to avoid unintended pregnancies and ensure access to safe abortion.
