Resistant Superbug Confirmed in US

Adding more urgency to the need to develop alternate drugs, a highly resistant superbug previously unseen in the U.S. has reached the country.

A strain of E. coli resistant to the last-line antibiotic colistin has been discovered in a Pennsylanvia woman, according to a study published Thursday in Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy.
CDC and Pennsylvania health officials said the case in Pennsylvania alone is not a reason to panic, as the woman’s infection could still be treated with other antibiotics.

But the concern is that the antibiotic-resistant gene found in the bacteria, known as mcr-1, could spread to other types of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
