Taking the advice of their legislators to heart, a group of women in Miami, Florida turned to their dentists for pap smears and yeast infection treatments.
But the dental clinic at the Jessie Trice Community Health Center turned down their requests for help with their “vagina care needs.”
If their requests sounds absurd, consider the background: a bill signed into law by Florida Governor Rick Scott that cuts funding to women’s healthcare at clinics (translation: Planned Parenthood) that offer privately funded abortions. As Barbara Zdravecky, president of Planned Parenthood of Southwest and Central Florida, said, the bill’s defenders actually suggested that women could visit dentists for health care (Orlando Weekly).
And while the gravity of the law couldn’t be further from funny—activists say low-income women will be hit the hardest—the protesters deserve props for powerfully highlighting the absurdity of the situation.
The Quote: "I came to see the dentist," said Yolanda Davis. "I have a bad yeast infection."
