In a letter to the New England Journal of Medicine, researchers in Paris have found evidence pointing to the possibility of Zika transmission from oral sex—or maybe even “deep kissing.”
A previously healthy 24-year-old woman presented in February with typical Zika symptoms (fever, myalgia, rash, etc.). She had never traveled to a Zika-affected region but reported having oral sex with a man who had recently returned from Brazil with similar symptoms.
The finding supports previous evidence of sexual transmission of the Zika virus documented in Texas and elsewhere.
The authors from the Institut National de la Santé et de la Recherche Médicale and other institutions urge more research be conducted to understand the virus’s natural history.
