To Rio, or not to Rio

WHO is engaged in its own marathon these days: Evaluating the risk of Brazil’s hosting of the Games that will draw a half million athletes and spectators from all over the world.

WHO will convene its Emergency Committee on Zika this month to consider the risks of posed by the Olympics, scheduled to start August 4 in Rio de Janeiro. A WHO spokesperson emphasized that the International Olympics Committee will decide about holding the event.

Although 150 public health experts issued a letter last week calling for the Olympics to be delayed or moved, top US health officials have agreed with WHO experts that Zika did not pose enough of a risk to postpone or move the Olympics.
