Time for HIV-Level Response

The WHO urged countries to step up the fight against hepatitis, noting that 400 million are infected with hepatitis B or C, yet few are aware they have it and fewer still are under treatment.

The Numbers:

  • 400 million people have hepatitis B or C (10X more than those infected with HIV)
  • Only ~1 in 20 people with viral hepatitis know their status; just 1 in 100 infected are being treated

The Quote: “The world has ignored hepatitis at its peril,” said WHO Director General Margaret Chan. “It is time to mobilize a global response to hepatitis on the scale similar to that generated to fight other communicable diseases like HIV AIDS and tuberculosis.”
