Zika Won’t Wait for Politics

US Senate Democrats blocked a $1.1 billion package to fund the US fight against the Zika virus yesterday, increasing the odds that lawmakers will depart for an extended July recess without any progress on the request.

The Democrats objected to “poison pill” measures added by Republicans to the bill, including spending cuts and provisions to block funding for Planned Parenthood and curb environmental regulations.

The Quote: “This is the ultimate playing politics with the public’s health and it’s really shameful and just unfortunate,” said pediatrician Irwin Redlener, director of Columbia University’s National Center for Disaster Preparedness.
