$1.4 Billion, Wasted

The US essentially wasted $1.4 billion on abstinence education to prevent HIV in Africa, according to an independent study published in Health Affairs.

Comparing sub-Saharan African countries that received abstinence ed funding under the US President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) against others that did not, Stanford researchers Nathan Lo, Anita Lowe and Eran Bendavid found no difference in behaviors linked to a higher risk of contracting HIV.

The number of years women and girls remained in school showed a much greater effect in reducing risky behavior, they discovered.
