The Contagion of Violence

Violence against children—from Syrian refugees, to the lost boys of Sudan, to the sexual abuse of children that fuels the HIV epidemic—constitutes a health crisis, the WHO says, prompting it to design a coordinated strategy to address the suffering.

Up to 1/2 of the world's 2 billion children experienced physical, sexual or emotional violence in the previous year, writes Ariana Eunjung Cha, referencing a study published in January in the journal Pediatrics. The WHO plan, pioneered by the CDC, provides a 7-point strategy addressing everything from firearm access and gender issues to better housing and education.

The Quote: "We need to be thinking of violence as a contagious disease and interrupt that cycle," says CDC Director Tom Frieden.
