Minors in the Mines

In India, children make up 1/5 of all mine workers, working in dangerous conditions and suffering from exposure to coal and silica dust, and noxious fumes.

Indian officials downplay the problem, writes Rina Chandran, but the International Labor Organization estimates there are 5.7 million child workers in India.

Filmmaker Chandrasekhar Reddy was shocked to find so many children working in coal mines in northeastern India, prompting him to take up the issue for his documentary, 'Fireflies in the Abyss', which won Best Film in the Mumbai International Film Festival in February.
