Tanzania Toughens Response

Tanzania passed a new law making child marriage illegal under any circumstances, with a 30-year jail term for Tanzanian men who marry or impregnate schoolgirls.

The law focuses on protecting girls, but is also designed to work hand-in-hand with Tanzania's free education policy, helping girls complete school.

In Tanzania, home to one the world’s highest adolescent pregnancy and birth rates in the world, 21% of girls aged 15-19 have given birth.
