Brexit’s African Impact

Philippe Guinot, Senegal country leader for the international health organization PATH, has watched warily as a rising wave of isolationism travels around the globe.

Particularly in the wake of Great Britain’s vote to exit the European Union, Guinot worries that nationalistic sentiments could endanger efforts in Senegal and other African countries to finally eliminate the threat of malaria for good.

Over the last decade, Senegal has cut malaria deaths among children by more than 1/2, but external support from developed nations like France and the US is vital to cementing this progress. He writes, “We can’t allow nationalist forces to dampen the very real prospect of a world without malaria.”
