New Numbers on Menstrual Hygiene

In Kaduna State, Nigeria, only 37% of reproductive-age women have everything they need for proper menstrual hygiene, like clean materials, pain medication, and private facilities to change and dispose of used products.

PMA2020 discovered the shortfall through a survey of nearly 3,000 females of ages 15 to 49, which also revealed disparities in access to private facilities among urban and rural women.

“These results reveal a widespread need for improved menstrual hygiene management options for women in Kaduna. Something as simple as making disposable sanitary pads affordable and readily available for Nigerian girls and women to properly manage their periods will greatly improve their lives,” said Elizabeth Omoluabi, principal investigator for the PMA2020/Nigeria survey.
