An Opioid SOS

For the first time in history, the US Surgeon General has sent a letter to every physician in the country urging them to pull back on prescribing opioids.

In his letter, Surgeon General Vivek Murthy suggests physical therapy or non-addictive medications as alternatives. When opioid prescription cannot be avoided, Murthy recommends starting with the lowest dosage possible, for the shortest period of time.

The letter is in response to what Murthy and other public health officials have described as “the opioid epidemic,” a steep rise in addiction rates and overdose deaths involving opioid medications, such as hydrocodone and oxycodone.
