Undocumented African migrants are falling prey to Egypt’s underground kidney trade, according to several studies cited in an article for the Thomas Reuters Foundation. The practice has flourished in Egypt where paying for a transplant procedure is legal, but buying a kidney is illegal.
In this grey area, many hospitals look the other way and perform surgeries with illegally procured kidneys. Egypt’s Health Ministry has yet to weigh in on the matter.
Meanwhile, migrants report being lured with prostitutes, threatened, extorted, or even killed for their organs.
