No one—or, no sane one—disputes the value of vaccines, but how to have them developed and ready to stop unexpected outbreaks like Ebola?

The Wellcome Trust, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the World Economic Forum and the government of Norway offer a solution. Founded this week in London, the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations aims to bank a slew of candidate vaccines for viral diseases like Lassa fever, Marburg fever, MERS, SARS, etc.

CEPI will identify several possible vaccines for each and put them through animal and small safety trials on people so they will be ready for a future outbreak—minimizing response time and cost.
