With 115 cases of the Zika virus confirmed this week in Singapore, plus 1 in neighboring Malaysia, public health officials now are wondering if this is the beginning of the epidemic in Asia and Africa. According to CDC and WHO experts, no one knows at this point.
Among the questions to be resolved:
• Which strain of the virus is it?
• Where will it appear next?
• Could local populations have developed some immunity from previously unnoticed outbreaks of Zika or similar arboviruses like West Nile virus and dengue fever?
No surprise: Experts say more funding is needed to answer these questions.
