Beyond Innovation

A dearth of comprehensive and reliable data on Africa thwarts successful innovation and development in that continent, says Ayo Ajayi, Africa Director for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

According to the World Bank, between 2000 and 2009, 26 countries in sub-Saharan African conducted fewer than 2 surveys capable of reliably measuring poverty. Though there is still a long way to go—particularly toward collecting data on women and girls—Ajayi says innovations such as bringing smartphones to rural areas have helped address the problem.
