Hard-Shelled Heroes

The horseshoe crab has crawled onto our list of 100 Objects That Shaped Public Health (by the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health) by preventing millions of people worldwide from contracting life-threatening infections.

A clotting compound in horseshoe crab blood can detect even the smallest amount of deadly bacteria and quickly isolate the threat. From vaccines to needles to pacemakers, any drug or device that will come in contact with the human body must first be safety-checked by a test using the crab’s blood.

Check GHN every Wednesday for an up-close look at one of the objects that made the list.
