The UN apologized publicly yesterday for its role in the spread of cholera in Haiti, but stopped short of acknowledging the source of the outbreak, Nepalese peacekeepers.
Speaking before the General Assembly yesterday, Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon said “We simply did not do enough with regard to the cholera outbreak and its spread in Haiti … We are profoundly sorry about our role.”
The UN promise to eradicate cholera from the country stands unmet, although Ban’s aides said yesterday that the UN is close to raising $200 million to fix Haiti’s water and sanitation system and provide treatment.
