A Fertility First

After having her fertility restored with ovarian tissue frozen at puberty, a 24-year-old woman from Dubai gave birth in London this week, in what is believed to be the first case of its kind.
Born with beta thalassaemia, a congenital blood disorder with a high incidence in the UAE, her ovaries were removed before a bone marrow transplant 15 years ago and frozen.
“This is a huge step forward," says Sara Matthews, the woman’s doctor. “Transplantation works for older women, but we’ve never known if we could take tissue from a child, freeze it and make it work again."
