And Now, for Some Cute Pictures of Microbes

If you’re feeling weary of all the American politics, we take you now to the Netherlands and the public health version of cute cat videos: an animation of Dutch scientist Antonie van Leeuwenhoek’s adventures with microbes.
It also happens to touch on a very apolitical truth: that most of life is invisible. “We still have this idea that we’re the most central feature of Earth,” but it’s the humans that are the bystanders. The microbes are doing the work.” Using his handmade microscope, van Leeuwenhoek offered history’s first glimpses into the microbial world, sparking awe and an era of discovery.
